About
Masashi Ohtsu is a multidisciplinary artist whose work spans fine art, film, music, photography, and design. Born in Osaka, Japan, and raised between Japan and New York, he earned a BFA in Photography from Parsons School of Design, where he developed the foundation for a career defined by artistic depth and technological foresight.
In 1995, he co-founded bmm art & computer inc, a pioneering New York–based design, development, and consulting studio that helped shape the early internet era and continues to influence digital creative strategy. Through his work with bmm, Masashi gained profound insight into digital platforms, emerging media, and the evolving intersections of art and technology. His collaborative projects have spanned global advertising campaigns, eCommerce platforms, editorial features, and multimedia installations.
Masashi’s artistic practice has been showcased internationally in galleries and site-specific exhibitions, and his photography, video, and design work have been published both in the United States and abroad. His film and video projects reflect a deep engagement with both experimental and narrative storytelling. Notably, he contributed to the acclaimed documentary The Black Crowes: Cabin Fever, which received recognition as an inventive portrait of the legendary rock band.
Extending his interdisciplinary vision into the realm of music, Masashi founded the independent label buddhafunk, a platform for original, experimental releases. To date, the label has produced Wet Pinkey and A Soundtrack to an Imaginary Film, works that embody his fusion of multi-disciplinary artistry and sonic exploration.
With a career at the intersection of art, media, and technology, Masashi Ohtsu continues to redefine contemporary creative practice, bridging tradition and innovation across genres and disciplines.
